Brian Barreto
A multimedia artist primarily sculpting in marble, Brian Barreto pursues the human form as a locus between identity, gender, and the inimitable joy of belonging. Current themes explore transformational bodyscapes, reliquary, and cultural fragmentation — often re-contextualizing historical canon into a contemporary discourse.
Having apprenticed sculpture in Germany and the US, they furthered their studies at the University of Wisconsin. Brian continues to build upon their knowledge through their own research and studio art practice, ongoing curatorial and collaborative projects, teaching, and learning to better forge their own tools and develop sustainable methods of production. Brian has exhibited their work in the United States and Europe, and is committed to creating further opportunities for artists and researchers in their community through the Alluvial Project, an artist-run project space and gallery.
